This study proposes a novel probiotic design approach to designing healthy buildings in relation to beneficial microbes in response to advances in medical fields that now understand the integral role that bacteria play in human health.

Evidence suggests that the separation of humans and non-humans has gone too far, and that missing microbes are contributing to the emergence of chronic and autoimmune diseases in developed cities.

Probiotic design is based on current knowledge of the microbiome and the need to reintroduce environmental microbial diversity into buildings.

The goal of this interdisciplinary approach between microbiology and architecture is to create living materials embedded with beneficial bacteria for buildings in order to directly shape the indoor microbiome towards a healthier microbial condition.
